The Man Who Built The Sierra Club

by Robert Wyss, The Man Who Built The Sierra Club Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Man Who Built The Sierra Club book, David Brower (1912–2000) was a central figure in the modern environmental movement. His leadership, vision, and elegant conception of the wilderness forever changed how we approach nature. In many ways, he was a twentieth-century Thoreau. Brower transformed the Sierra Club into a national force that challenged and stopped federally sponsored projects that would have dammed the Grand Canyon and destroyed hundreds of millions of acres of our nation's wilderness. To admirers, he was tireless, passionate, visionary, and unyielding. To opponents and even some supporters, he was contentious and polarizing. As a young man growing up in Berkeley, California, Brower proved himself a fearless climber of the Sierra Nevada's dangerous peaks. After serving in the Tenth Mountain Division during World War II, he became executive director of the Sierra Club. This uncompromising biography explores Brower's role as steward of the modern environmental movement. His passionate advocacy destroyed lifelong friendships and, at times, threatened his goals. Yet his achievements remain some of the most important triumphs of the conservation movement. What emerges from this unique portrait is a rich and robust profile of a leader who took up the work of John Muir and, along with Rachel Carson, made environmentalism the cause of our time.

Seeing Green is the first history of ads, films, political posters, and magazine photography in the postwar American environmental movement. From fear of radioactive fallout during the Cold War to anxieties about global warming today, images have helped to produce what Dunaway calls "ecological citizenship," telling us that "we are all to blame." Dunaway heightens our awareness of how depictions of environmental catastrophes are constructed, manipulated, and fought over"--Publisher info.

Escape From The Atomic Fallout

by Capt. Gardner Martin Kelley, Escape From The Atomic Fallout Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Escape From The Atomic Fallout book, The author along with his wife and two young grandsons are stranded at his (almost bomb proof) hunting camp in Marion, Maine after a severe snow storm blocks the roads. Unknown to the fact that there has been a disaster and all are dead, the captain travels by snowshoes to investigate. Rather than join his neighbors in death he must get himself, his wife, and the two boys on a long and dangerous cruise. The spindrift spray slashed across the windows of the pilot house. The rugged boat built for such weather dove into the waves and up she rose higher and higher, then down to stop with a crash and shudder. Captain Kelley at the wheel watched the compass heading like a hawk keeping the vessel headed into the waves, was a must. If the boat rolled off course and got hit on the side by a wave it could be the end. The heavy ice coating aloft in the rigging would not allow a quick rise. His tired eyes peered again at the compass and then looked ahead into the darkness. How anxiously he awaited daylight and the sun to melt off the ice from the rigging. What was he doing out here on the ocean in the winter storm? The answer to that question of course is the following interesting sea story: The Escape from the Atomic Fallout The rugged sea captain with his wife and two young grandsons went on a visit to his Maine hunting camp in late November and are stranded by atomic bomb fallout. They must get from the frigid cold weather to the warmer climate further down south. The preparations and start in a boat must be made from Lubec, Maine to the east coast of North Carolina, near Cape Lookout Lighthouse.

Gamer Nation

by John Wills, Gamer Nation Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Gamer Nation book, In 1975, design engineer Dave Nutting completed work on a new arcade machine. A version of Taito's Western Gun, a recent Japanese arcade machine, Nutting's Gun Fight depicted a classic showdown between gunfighters. Rich in Western folklore, the game seemed perfect for the American market; players easily adapted to the new technology, becoming pistol-wielding pixel cowboys. One of the first successful early arcade titles, Gun Fight helped introduce an entire nation to video-gaming and sold more than 8,000 units. In Gamer Nation, John Wills examines how video games co-opt national landscapes, livelihoods, and legends. Arguing that video games toy with Americans' mass cultural and historical understanding, Wills show how games reprogram the American experience as a simulated reality. Blockbuster games such as Civilization, Call of Duty, and Red Dead Redemption repackage the past, refashioning history into novel and immersive digital states of America. Controversial titles such as Custer's Revenge and 08.46 recode past tragedies. Meanwhile, online worlds such as Second Life cater to a desire to inhabit alternate versions of America, while Paperboy and The Sims transform the mundane tasks of everyday suburbia into fun and addictive challenges. Working with a range of popular and influential games, from Pong, Civilization, and The Oregon Trail to Grand Theft Auto, Silent Hill, and Fortnite, Wills critically explores these gamic depictions of America. Touching on organized crime, nuclear fallout, environmental degradation, and the War on Terror, Wills uncovers a world where players casually massacre Native Americans and Cold War soldiers alike, a world where neo-colonialism, naive patriotism, disassociated violence, and racial conflict abound, and a world where the boundaries of fantasy and reality are increasingly blurred. Ultimately, Gamer Nation reveals not only how video games are a key aspect of contemporary American culture, but also how games affect how people relate to America itself.
