Early Medieval Exegesis In The Latin West

by Thomas O'Loughlin, Early Medieval Exegesis In The Latin West Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Early Medieval Exegesis In The Latin West book, This collection of fifteen articles, concentrating on the early Latin Middle Ages, explores the variety of medieval exegesis and highlights just how patchy has been our understanding of it. One of the significant developments in recent scholarship was the awareness among historians of ideas, historians of theology, and medievalists of the importance of the Christian scriptures in the Latin Middle Ages. Indeed, to understand the period one must understand the value they placed upon the Bible, how they related to it, and how they studied it. As these papers show, how the Scriptures were used in different pursuits (formal theology or history) varied greatly, and exegesis differed over time and with cultures.

The Stigmata In Medieval And Early Modern Europe

by Carolyn Muessig, The Stigmata In Medieval And Early Modern Europe Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Stigmata In Medieval And Early Modern Europe book, Francis of Assisi's reported reception of the stigmata on Mount La Verna in 1224 is almost universally considered to be the first documented account of an individual miraculously and physically receiving the five wounds of Christ. The early thirteenth-century appearance of this miracle, however, is not as unexpected as it first seems. Interpretations of Galatians 6:17--I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus Christ in my body--had been circulating since the early Middle Ages in biblical commentaries. These works perceived those with the stigmata as metaphorical representations of martyrs bearing the marks of persecution in order to spread the teaching of Christ in the face of resistance. By the seventh century, the meaning of Galatians 6:17 had been appropriated by bishops and priests as a sign or mark of Christ that they received invisibly at their ordination. Priests and bishops came to be compared to soldiers of Christ, who bore the brand (stigmata) of God on their bodies, just like Roman soldiers who were branded with the name of their emperor. By the early twelfth century, crusaders were said to bear the actual marks of the passion in death and even sometimes as they entered into battle. The Stigmata in Medieval and Early Modern Europe traces the birth and evolution of religious stigmata and particularly of stigmatic theology, as understood through the ensemble of theological discussions and devotional practices. Carolyn Muessig assesses the role stigmatics played in medieval and early modern religious culture, and the way their contemporaries reacted to them. The period studied covers the dominant discourse of stigmatic theology: that is, from Peter Damian's eleventh-century theological writings to 1630 when the papacy officially recognised the authenticity of Catherine of Siena's stigmata.

Churches In Early Medieval Ireland

by Tomás Ó Carragáin, Churches In Early Medieval Ireland Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Churches In Early Medieval Ireland book, This is the first book devoted to churches in Ireland dating from the arrival of Christianity in the fifth century to the early stages of the Romanesque around 1100, including those built to house treasures of the golden age of Irish art, such as the Book of Kells and the Ardagh chalice. Carragin's comprehensive survey of the surviving examples forms the basis for a far-reaching analysis of why these buildings looked as they did, and what they meant in the context of early Irish society. Carragin also identifies a clear political and ideological context for the first Romanesque churches in Ireland and shows that, to a considerable extent, the Irish Romanesque represents the perpetuation of a long-established architectural tradition.
