Focus In High School Mathematics

by Michael Shaughnessy, Focus In High School Mathematics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Focus In High School Mathematics book, Reasoning about and making sense of statistics and probability are essential to students’ future success. This volume belongs to a series that supports NCTM’s Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making by providing additional guidance for making reasoning and sense making part of the mathematics experiences of all high school students every day. Six investigations illustrate how to help high school students develop their skills in working with data. The investigations emphasise the roles of reasoning and sense making in defining a statistical question and collecting, analysing and interpreting data to answer it. The authors examine the key elements of statistical reasoning identified in Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making and elaborate on the associated reasoning habits. The investigations show how students can use these habits in analysing data sets, constructing and comparing representations of data and using samples and simulations to gather data. They reason about distributions of data and how to use measures of centre, lines of best fit and other tools and techniques to detect trends, make predictions and determine the allowable scope of conclusions. The development of statistical reasoning must be a high priority for school mathematics. This book offers a blueprint for emphasising statistical reasoning and sense making in the high school curriculum.

Focus In High School Mathematics

by Marilyn E. Strutchens, Focus In High School Mathematics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Focus In High School Mathematics book, No matter what the mathematics class, infusing reasoning and sense making into the daily mathematical experience of all high school students is crucial. ""All high school students"" includes low-performing students; gifted students; students of different racial, sociolinguistic and socioeconomic status; students with disabilites and students who are mathematically talented. The writers of this volume hope to further the dialogue about how to create for all students empowering mathematical experiences that incorporate reasoning and sense making.

Focus In High School Mathematics

by Karen J. Graham, Focus In High School Mathematics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Focus In High School Mathematics book, The algebraic notation we use today allows for the compact representation of complex calculations and problems, however, that compactness can be a barrier to sense making. Teachers must help students reason through this barrier. Reasoning about and making sense of algebra are essential to students’ future success. This book examines the five key elements (meaningful use of symbols, mindful manipulation, reasoned solving, connection algebra with geometry and linking expressions and functions) identified in Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making in more detail and elaborates on the associated reasoning habits. This volume is one of a series of books that support NCTM’s Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making by providing additional guidance for making reasoning and sense making part of the mathematics experiences of all high school students every day.

Assessment Of Authentic Performance In School Mathematics

by Richard A. Lesh, Assessment Of Authentic Performance In School Mathematics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Assessment Of Authentic Performance In School Mathematics book, This book is the result of a conference sponsored by the Educational Testing Service and the University of Wisconsin's National Center for Research in Mathematical Sciences Education. The purpose of the conference was to facilitate the work of a group of scholars whose interests included the assessment of higher-order understandings and processes in foundation-level (pre-high school) mathematics. Discussions focused on such issues as the purposes of assessment, guidelines for producing and scoring "real-life" assessment activities, and the meanings of such terms as "deeper and higher-order understanding," "cognitive objectives," and "authentic mathematical activities." Assessment was viewed as a critical component of complex, dynamic, and continually adapting educational systems. During the time that the chapters in this book were being written, sweeping changes in mathematics education were being initiated in response to powerful recent advances in technology, cognitive psychology, and mathematics, as well as to numerous public demands for educational reform. These changes have already resulted in significant reappraisals of what it means to understand mathematics, of the nature of mathematics teaching and learning, and of the real-life situations in which mathematics is useful. The challenge was to pursue assessment-related initiatives that are systematically valid, in the sense that they work to complement and enhance other improvements in the educational system rather than act as an impediment to badly needed curriculum reforms. To address these issues, most chapters in this book focus on clarifying and articulating the goals of assessment and instruction, and they stress the content of assessment above its mode of delivery. Computer- or portfolio-based assessments are interpreted as means to ends, not as ends in themselves. Assessment is conceived as an ongoing documentation process, seamless with instruction, whose quality hinges upon its ability to provide complete and appropriate information as needed to inform priorities in instructional decision making. This book tackles some of the most complicated issues related to assessment, and it offers fresh perspectives from leaders in the field--with the hope that the ultimate consumer in the instruction/assessment enterprise, the individual student, will reclaim his or her potential for self-directed mathematics learning.
