Robert Hooke S Contributions To Mechanics

by F.F. Centore, Robert Hooke S Contributions To Mechanics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Robert Hooke S Contributions To Mechanics book, In the history of science and philosophy and the philosophy of nature the name Robert Hooke has been largely ignored. If he is occasionally men tioned, it is usually in one of two ways: either he is briefly referred to in passing, or, he is viewed through the eyes of some later giant in the history of science and philosophy such as Sir Isaac Newton. Both approaches, however, do Hooke an injustice. Tn the academic world of today, there is no scholarly study available of Hooke's actual place in the history of science and philosophy with respect to his doctrines and accomplishments within the area of mechanics. Such a situation constitutes an unfortunate lacuna in the academic life of the world in our time. It is the more unfortunate because, in his time, Robert Hooke played an important role in the intellectual life of his world. Hooke, a contemporary of Boyle and Newton, lived from 1635 to 1703. For most of his active intellectual life he held the position of Curator of Experiments to the Royal Society of London. As a result of his own initi ative and of directives given him by other members of the Society, Hooke performed hundreds of experiments designed to explore the secrets of na ture so that men might better understand God's creation. In this treatise I will disengage from the large disorganized welter of monographs and trea tises left by Hooke all the material pertinent to the science of mechanics.

Eye Of The Beholder Johannes Vermeer Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek And The Reinvention Of Seeing

by Laura J. Snyder, Eye Of The Beholder Johannes Vermeer Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek And The Reinvention Of Seeing Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Eye Of The Beholder Johannes Vermeer Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek And The Reinvention Of Seeing book, The remarkable story of how an artist and a scientist in seventeenth-century Holland transformed the way we see the world. On a summer day in 1674, in the small Dutch city of Delft, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek—a cloth salesman, local bureaucrat, and self-taught natural philosopher—gazed through a tiny lens set into a brass holder and discovered a never-before imagined world of microscopic life. At the same time, in a nearby attic, the painter Johannes Vermeer was using another optical device, a camera obscura, to experiment with light and create the most luminous pictures ever beheld. “See for yourself!” was the clarion call of the 1600s. Scientists peered at nature through microscopes and telescopes, making the discoveries in astronomy, physics, chemistry, and anatomy that ignited the Scientific Revolution. Artists investigated nature with lenses, mirrors, and camera obscuras, creating extraordinarily detailed paintings of flowers and insects, and scenes filled with realistic effects of light, shadow, and color. By extending the reach of sight the new optical instruments prompted the realization that there is more than meets the eye. But they also raised questions about how we see and what it means to see. In answering these questions, scientists and artists in Delft changed how we perceive the world. In Eye of the Beholder, Laura J. Snyder transports us to the streets, inns, and guildhalls of seventeenth-century Holland, where artists and scientists gathered, and to their studios and laboratories, where they mixed paints and prepared canvases, ground and polished lenses, examined and dissected insects and other animals, and invented the modern notion of seeing. With charm and narrative flair Snyder brings Vermeer and Van Leeuwenhoek—and the men and women around them—vividly to life. The story of these two geniuses and the transformation they engendered shows us why we see the world—and our place within it—as we do today. Eye of the Beholder was named "A Best Art Book of the Year" by Christie's and "A Best Read of the Year" by New Scientist in 2015.

Fields Of Expertise

by Maison française d'Oxford, Fields Of Expertise Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Fields Of Expertise book, The primacy of experts and expertise in current fields of public policy, governance and non-governmental organizations has accompanied increasing confusion on the foundations of their practices and the adequacy of their methods. Fields of Expertise clarifies the complex heritage of experts by exploring their relationship with legal, political and administrative powers from a comparative historical and interdisciplinary perspective. Specifically, the authors offer case studies on expert procedures in the two capital cities of Paris and London since 1600 in the essential areas of risk management, medical procedures, economic policy, and administrative reform. In doing so, they provide insight into the evolution of expert procedures while at the same time taking into consideration the interdisciplinary nature of scholarship on expertise drawn from Sociology, Science Studies and Political Science. The following articles thus challenge traditional views on the nature of expertise and provide a synthesis of the vast and disparate literature that has been written on the subject.Fields of Expertise's international perspectives and multi-disciplinary grasp of the literature in political science, sociology, science studies and history will be useful to scholars and students alike in addressing this highly topical issue. The essays reference mainstream sources and widely-documented cases on experts and expertise, making it accessible to the general reader as well.

A For Alibi

by Irene Kopelman, A For Alibi Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A For Alibi book, How does science transform observations into scientific facts? What is the role of interpretation in the construction of knowledge? How could art re-signify a historical process? Such are some of the questions raised in A for Alibi, a book which explores the boundaries of scientific practice and art. In the last few decades, a new branch of historical studies, called "experimental history" has begun to investigate scientific processes from a particular perspective, derived from a "hands-on" methodology. Scientific instruments are utilized and combined to become a direct source that leads to an understanding not just of scientific history but also of scientific practice. Similar to contemporary art practice, the experimental historical approach implies a combination of theory, practice and process, sharing a wider understanding of practice in the construction of meanings. Along these lines, the Uqbar Foundation invited a group of artists to perform research and develop projects using the impressive collection of historical instruments and optical devices housed in the Utrecht University Museum. Fully illustrated, this book documents the artists' projects as well as the A for Alibi symposium where renowned scientists and art historians lectured on the origins of modern visual culture, for instance on the relation between vision and representation in history, or on the ways in which science builds up a common and social image of the world. The book also features illustrations of numerous scientific instruments from the Utrecht University Museum collection. A for Alibi accompanies the same-titled show at de Appel, Amsterdam, July 14-August 19, 2007. Texts by Charlotte Bigg, Erna Fiorentini, Mika Hannula, Raimundas Malasauskas, Katrin Solhdju Contributions by the participating artists Maria Barnas, James Beckett, Mariana Castillo Deball, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Suchan Kinoshita, Irene Kopelman, Tine Melzer, and Brian O'Connell Interview with Tiemen Cocquyt
