Transitions To Alternative Energy Systems

by Thomas Baumgartner, Transitions To Alternative Energy Systems Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Transitions To Alternative Energy Systems book, The industrial world was built to run on cheap oil, and now the cheap oil has run out. For a while longer, the West will depend for its energy upon expensive oil --much of it obtained from sources that are geographically remote· or politically unstable. so in the near future, the world mus.t shift from oil to other sources of energy. TRANSITIONS TO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS explores how such change can best be encouraged. The governments of the world, then, do not have the option of piously washing their hands of the energy crisis. They must be involved: they must pursue wise policies: and they must prove far more effective in the future than they have in the past. Through its careful analysis of past programs to promote renewable resource development, Tom Baumgartner's new book provides the public sector with precisely the kind of guidance it needs.

Biofuels Solar And Wind As Renewable Energy Systems

by D. Pimentel, Biofuels Solar And Wind As Renewable Energy Systems Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Biofuels Solar And Wind As Renewable Energy Systems book, The petroleum age began about 150 years ago. Easily available energy has s- ported major advances in agriculture, industry, transportation, and indeed many diverse activities valued by humans. Now world petroleum and natural gas s- plies have peaked and their supplies will slowly decline over the next 40–50 years until depleted. Although small amounts of petroleum and natural gas will remain underground, it will be energetically and economically impossible to extract. In the United States, coal supplies could be available for as long as 40–50 years, depending on how rapidly coal is utilized as a replacement for petroleum and natural gas. Having been comfortable with the security provided by fossil energy, especially petroleum and natural gas, we appear to be slow to recognize the energy crisis in the U. S. and world. Serious energy conservation and research on viable renewable - ergy technologies are needed. Several renewable energy technologies already exist, but sound research is needed to improve their effectiveness and economics. Most of the renewable energy technologies are in uenced by geographic location and face problems of intermittent energy supply and storage. Most renewable technologies require extensive land; a few researchers have even suggested that one-half of all land biomass could be harvested in order to supply the U. S. with 30% of its liquid fuel! Some optimistic investigations of renewable energy have failed to recognize that only 0. 1% of the solar energy is captured annually in the U. S.

Complex Systems And Social Practices In Energy Transitions

by Nicola Labanca, Complex Systems And Social Practices In Energy Transitions Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Complex Systems And Social Practices In Energy Transitions book, This book offers an interdisciplinary discussion of the fundamental issues concerning policies for sustainable transition to renewable energies from the perspectives of sociologists, physicists, engineers, economists, anthropologists, biologists, ecologists and policy analysts. Adopting a combined approach, these are analysed taking both complex systems and social practice theories into consideration to provide deeper insights into the evolution of energy systems. The book then draws a series of important conclusions and makes recommendations for the research community and policy makers involved in the design and implementation of policies for sustainable energy transitions.

Changing Energy

by John H. Perkins, Changing Energy Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Changing Energy book, "Changing Energy outlines how humanity came to its current energy economy through three previous energy transitions and now stands poised for a necessary fourth one. Despite the immense benefits conferred by a global energy economy based primarily on coal, oil, gas, and uranium, societies must now rebuild their energy economies to rely as much as possible on renewable energy used efficiently. This imperative to change comes from the risks of climate change plus the dangers of geopolitical tensions, health and environmental effects, and the long-term prospects for ever depleting sources of today's energy sources. Changing Energy argues that sustainability of the benefits from energy services will come from investments made in the technologies of the fourth transition. Perkins envisions a viable post-fossil fuel energy economy and outlines the barriers that must be resolved to reach it."--Provided by publisher.
